Participants experience the unique running spirit in Berlin

Numerous runners stood shoulder to shoulder, some still tired from the previous day’s Berlin New Year’s Eve Run or from an extensive celebration. Many had rosy cheeks, all shared the same feeling: something new begins here. Amid remnants of New Year’s glitter and fluttering flags, the heart of the city beat to the rhythm of running shoes. Strangers nodded encouragement to one another, longtime running acquaintances embraced with laughter. Read more about the long tradition of the event.

The route and special highlights of the New Year’s Run

When the starting signal sounded for the 4,378 participants, the tense silence dissolved into motion. The 4 km course led runners—some in costumes, others still adorned with streamers from the night before—from the Brandenburg Gate to Berlin Cathedral and back. The outward leg followed iconic streets past historic sites that appeared almost reverent in the soft winter light, as well as along the illuminations of a luxury hotel and the Christmas market. Every kilometer told its own story: of resolutions, personal challenges, moments lost and gained. The jogging pace set by the pacers left plenty of room for reflection or casual conversation. New Year’s motivation: spectators cheer on the runners

Along the course, spectators clapped with cold hands, called out names, and cheered on strangers. Children held up handmade signs reading “Mom, you can do it!”—words that meant more on this day than usual. At the finish line, joy and satisfaction mingled: the first run of the year completed and the chance to do something good for the community right at the start of the year—this time for the Björn Schulz Foundation. Warming tea and traditional Berlin doughnuts added to the cheerful atmosphere.

Charity aspect: donations for the Björn Schulz Stiftung

SCC EVENTS, the organizer of the Berlin New Year’s Run, waived an entry fee but asked for donations for the Björn Schulz Stiftung. The foundation supports families with children, adolescents, and young adults who are affected by cancer, chronic, or life-threatening illnesses. Donations were collected directly during bib pickup. Those who could not attend the Berlin New Year’s Run in person or who wish to donate cashless can conveniently do so via the foundation’s online donation campaign on its website.
